Grey Reef Guided Fly Fishing Trips

When anglers are seeking big fish on expansive waters, we direct them to the Grey Reef on the lower section of the North Platte River. Here, year-round fishing opportunities abound, with the chance to reel in some impressive fish. While wading is an option, we find that fishing from a boat offers the most effective coverage of the water.

"The Mile," nestled in a secluded area south of Alcova, Wyoming, marks an advanced stretch of the North Platte River. As the river flows north towards Casper, it eventually dissipates into a series of reservoirs. Emerging from Alcova Reservoir, this stretch earns its reputation as the esteemed "Grey Reef" section, renowned for its trout abundance.

While dry fly fishing can be rewarding with proper timing, nymph rigs are typically the preferred approach along this stretch. The resident fish thrive on a steady diet of midges, baetis, scuds, worms, leeches, and other tailwater offerings, growing to impressive sizes. With such robust food sources, these fish continuously challenge even the most seasoned anglers and their equipment.

To tackle these waters effectively, a fast action rod ranging from 5 to 7 weight is essential. As spring and fall arrive, upgrading to a 7 weight rod becomes indispensable for streamer fishing. Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout eagerly pursue sizable streamers with heavy sink tips, necessitating the use of a stiffer rod.

Our guiding season extends year-round on these sections, contingent upon favorable weather conditions. While spring and fall typically offer optimal fishing conditions, summer can be equally productive. Embark on a journey with one of our experienced guides and delve into the exquisite high plains fisheries that Wyoming is renowned for.
