Neal Warner - Horsetooth Specialist
Neal was born and raised right here in Fort Collins. Growing up, he spent much of his time fishing the Cache la Poudre and Horsetooth. He has been guiding these waters for the last decade or more and knows the ins and outs of our local fisheries extremely well. His free time is spent focusing on site fishing carp, exploring local still waters and saltwater flats fishing. His focus in guiding is on helping new anglers and chasing warmwater species and tailing carp from his skiff.
Lucky for us, Neal is passionate about sharing his knowledge of Horsetooth Reservoir and the warmwater species he loves to chase. Whether you're after smallmouth bass eating poppers, tailing carp, or the challenge of enticing a finicky walleye, Neal is ready to guide you toward success. With Horsetooth just minutes from his front door, he has spent countless hours dialing in the reservoir and all it has to offer.
In 2019, St. Peter’s was awarded one of the only guide permits on the reservoir. That new opportunity allowed Neal to combine the two things he loves most—guiding and fishing on Horsetooth. The following year, he upgraded his boat, motor, and equipment to provide the best fly fishing experience possible on the 'Tooth.
Most bass boats are designed for spin rods, but Neal converted his with the fly angler in mind: a large casting platform on the front, a poling platform on the back, and an open, spacious, snag-free deck that creates the ideal casting area for fly fishing—much like a saltwater flats skiff.
Another reason Neal is so passionate about warmwater fishing, is its crossover to his other favorite fishing scenario, saltwater flats fishing. His experience fishing the flats of Cuba, Florida and Mexico has given him a deep understanding of the unique challenges and techniques required to successfully target bonefish, permit, and tarpon. It has also given him direct insight into how one prepares you for the challenges of the other.
From reading subtle currents and spotting fish in skinny water, to mastering precise presentations in windy conditions, Neal has developed a skill set that directly translates to success on the flats. His guided trips are tailored not just as great days on the water, but as preparation for those once-in-a-lifetime saltwater adventures. By focusing on accuracy, stealth, and species-specific strategies, Neal helps anglers build the confidence and tactical foundation needed to chase the "big three" in destinations like Cuba and beyond.
Gear for Success
The gear needed for success at Horsetooth Reservoir differs from what we typically use on local rivers like the Poudre. Heavier rods, sink-tip lines, and short, stout leaders are the standard setup for targeting warmwater species in this environment. If you’re looking for a deeper dive into the gear and techniques that consistently produce results, be sure to check out our article: Fly Fishing at Horsetooth Reservoir — A Springtime Escape During Runoff. It covers specific recommendations and tactical insights to help you get the most out of your time on the water.

What to Expect on a Horsetooth Guide Trip
During our trips, you’ll have the chance to target a wide range of species. Smallmouth bass are the main draw here—aggressive and abundant, they hit flies ferociously and fight even harder. We especially look forward to and love targeting these fish using Poppers and Covert Missions for unbeatable topwater action. Rainbow trout are stocked regularly, offering fun action especially in spring and fall. Walleye, while less common on the fly, are present and catchable with the right technique, mainly hopping Clouser Minnows down rocky shelves or off sunken trees in 8-10 feet of water. Carp offer a challenging and visual fly fishing experience, cruising shallow bays and requiring stealth and precision.
Horsetooth Reservoir offers the perfect setting to sharpen your double haul and accuracy, especially when targeting smallmouth bass along rocky shorelines and tight structure. The need for quick, precise casts mirrors the demands of saltwater flats fishing, making it an ideal local training ground. Practicing here helps build the timing, power, and control essential for success in the salt.
As water temperatures rise in late spring and summer, smallmouth move into the shallows, often seeking structure like fallen trees, stumps, and overhanging branches. These shady ambush points provide the perfect cover for bass to strike unsuspecting prey. Targeting these areas with poppers is both effective and exciting—each cast brings the anticipation of a topwater explosion as a hungry smallie crushes your fly.
Expect fast-paced fishing along rocky banks, coves, and drop-offs where bass prowl in ambush. If you’re looking for fun topwater action and an alternative due to runoff, this is the trip for you!
