Both Brown Trout and Brook Trout spawn in the fall months. To successfully reproduce, female trout create spawning beds called redds. These redds are typically found in shallow areas of the river with sand or pea-sized gravel.

This gravel is important because it allows the eggs, or roe, to settle within the streambed while still receiving the oxygen-rich water flow they need to develop.

STAY OFF THE REDDS!

When identifying redds, look for shallow sections of the river with lighter-colored gravel that appears clean and freshly disturbed. You may also see trout turning broadside, moving gravel, or displaying other behaviors associated with active spawning.

If we want our kids and grandkids to continue enjoying the sport we all love, we need to do our part to protect these fish and their future generations. Avoid standing or wading on redds, and most importantly, do not target trout that are actively spawning.
