With so much discussion going on surrounding the Poudre and water
temperatures lately, we wanted to offer a reminder that checking the temperature yourself is key to knowing when and where it is appropriate to fish. Conditions can vary significantly depending on elevation, location, and
time of day.

While water temperatures are climbing in the afternoons, our higher elevations continue to stay cool through much of the day. As the day goes on, be more mindful in the lower canyon, particularly from Pingree Park Road downstream, where water temperatures will rise earlier than they do higher in the canyon.

Carry a thermometer, pay attention to changing conditions, and adjust your plans when needed. Be mindful, help keep the fishery healthy, and continue to enjoy this incredible resource responsibly.

The photos below were taken on August 6th and show that while our temperatures are rising once the heat kicks in, there is still plenty of water to fish before temperatures climb.

The Poudre is a unique watershed. With its steep elevation gradient, stretching from the high alpine of Rocky Mountain National Park to the foothills outside Fort Collins, keeps cold water flowing longer than many other Colorado rivers. While lower sections can warm during summer heat, cooler water is often just a short drive upstream, allowing anglers to continue fishing responsibly.

That said, fishing responsibly doesn't mean ignoring the conditions. It means adapting to them. Carry a thermometer, check water temperatures throughout the day, and don't hesitate to move upstream. An early start, heavier tippet to shorten the fight, and quick, careful fish handling all go a long way toward protecting this incredible resource.

Knowing how to get an accurate water temperature is key! When you are out on the water and want to check the temperature, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Step 1: Find moving water, not stagnant water.

Step 2: Hold your thermometer in the water long enough to get an accurate reading. For the Fishpond Digital Thermometer, allow at least 15 to 20 seconds. For an analog thermometer, allow 45 to 60 seconds.

Step 3: Adjust your fishing tactics accordingly based on the water temperature. See the diagram above for guidance.
