Experience one of Patagonia’s most remarkable fisheries, the mighty Rio Baker. Framed by glacier capped peaks and flowing with brilliant turquoise water, the Baker is renowned for its breathtaking scenery and exceptional dry fly fishing for large trout.
Brown and rainbow trout average around 18 inches, with fish approaching 30 inches always a possibility. From casting dries to rising trout to swinging streamers through powerful runs, the Baker and its surrounding waters offer an incredible variety of opportunities in a setting unlike anywhere else.
The Fishery
Patagonia Baker Lodge is located in the heart of one of Chilean Patagonia’s most diverse and productive fishing regions, home to exceptional brown and rainbow trout. Anglers can experience everything from floating the powerful Baker River and wading intimate spring creek style waters to exploring both small and expansive lakes, with outstanding sight fishing opportunities throughout the region.
Many of these fisheries are just minutes from the lodge, allowing you to spend less time traveling and more time on the water. Target species include brown and rainbow trout, green perch, and cherry salmon, with opportunities to pursue massive king salmon in some of the region’s more remote rivers.
The Baker River
The Baker is vast, flowing out of General Carrera Lake as a turquoise-blue, gin-clear river averaging 35,000 cfs. Despite its size, it's remarkably fishable—and one of the finest dry-fly and sight-fishing rivers in the world. From the lodge deck, it's common to see rainbow trout well over 20". The river's rockv edges and seam lines are alive with feeding fish, while back eddies can hold dozens of rising rainbows. We offer walk-and-wade as well as jet-boat floats to put you on the best water. Browns over 24" are always in play on large terrestrials and streamers, while consistent rainbow activity means you can fish at a relaxed pace or stay out all day.
The Cochrane River
Flowing from nearby Cochrane Lake, this medium-sized river looks like a giant spring creek—gin-clear water, heavy weed beds, and deep undercut banks. It's here that you'll find massive brown and rainbow trout from 4 to 8+ pounds, fueled by prolific hatches of caddis, mayflies, terrestrials, and forage fish. With its green-tinted clarity and rich structure, the Cochrane rivals New Zealand's best trout rivers for sight-fishing. Walk-and-wade days typically cover just 1—2 km, with endless opportunities to target trout feeding on or near the surface.
The Small Streams and Jeinimeni River
The lakes surrounding Patagonia Baker Lodge are home to enormous brown and rainbow trout that seasonally migrate into nearby mountain streams. These intimate waters offer incredible opportunities to target trophy fish in spectacular settings, with trout approaching 40 inches landed primarily on streamers.
Rainbow trout enter the rivers during the spring, while migratory browns arrive later in the season. Some fisheries are less than an hour from the lodge, while the most remote waters can only be reached by helicopter, adding another level of adventure to the experience.
Lakes and Lagoons
Baker Lodge’s lake fishing offers a truly unique experience for North American anglers. Crystal clear lakes and rocky shoals create exceptional sight fishing opportunities, while tannic waters come alive with dragonfly and damselfly hatches that bring trout crashing to the surface.
Expect explosive eats, leaping trout, and visual dry fly fishing reminiscent of New Zealand. Reed lines, weed beds, overhanging brush, and timbered shorelines provide endless shallow water habitat, creating exciting opportunities to target cruising and rising trout throughout the day.
Lodging
Baker Lodge sits directly on the river's most productive stretch. This oversized timber-frame retreat offers breathtaking views from every room. As Orvis Chief Fly Fishing Enthusiast Tom Rosenbauer says, "The view from their porch may be the most spectacular of any flyfishing lodge in the world.
With accommodations for just 12 guests, Patagonia Baker Lodge blends world-class comfort, fine dining, and the renowned hospitality of the family-owned Magic Waters lodges. Recognized as an Orvis-Endorsed International Destination of the Year and featured in publications such as American Angler, Gray's Sporting Journal, and The New York Times, the lodge is celebrated as much for its service as for its fishing.
Culinary Experience
Enjoy thoughtfully prepared meals featuring fresh local ingredients, Patagonian lamb, and seafood, complemented by Chilean wines and classic Pisco Sours. All beverages are included, and each evening wraps up around the table sharing stories and highlights from the day.
Exploring Beyond
Beyond Fishing For non-anglers—or simply for days off the water— Patagonia Baker Lodge offers a wide variety of outdoor adventures. Options include rafting the Baker River, horseback rides on vast Patagonian ranches, hiking in Patagonia National Park, heli-skiing and heli-biking, cooking classes, hot tubs by the river, boat tours to glaciers and the Marble Caves, scenic flights over the Northern Ice Field, visits to Laguna San Rafael, jet boat rides on Leones Lake, heli-trekking, and guided sightseeing excursions.
