Upper North Platte River Canyon Guided Fly Fishing Float Trips - Saratoga and Encampment, Wyoming

Peaceful and exquisite, the Upper North Platte River epitomizes the unspoiled beauty of nature that Northern Colorado has to offer. Three pristine wilderness areas, blanketed in untouched snow, serve as the source of this beloved river cherished by both our guides and clients.

The Upper North Platte River flows north from Colorado, into Wyoming along the Snowy Mountain range and through the Medicine Bow National Forest and Platte River Wilderness. Access is fairly sparse in Northgate Canyon, which is what makes float fishing from the boat ideal during the right time of year. In this steep canyon section, the river consists of rapids, large boulders, and tall rock cliffs. As the river moves downstream towards Encampment and Saratoga the canyon walls open into beautiful high desert with mountain scape views.

With scarce water after run-off, the real action is at the beginning and during run-off. Depending on the water year this typically takes place in late May- early July. This is the perfect time to take an Upper North Platte River guide fly fishing trip.  During this timeframe, our guides have a field day in their rafts teaching clients to throw big flies for happy fish. Post-runoff keeps water levels low enough to pursue some excellent wade fishing with dry flies, nymphs and streamers. Due to such a remote location, you will be in awe when you look up to see elk, eagles, coyotes and much more wildlife along the stream.

On your early summer Upper North Platte River guided trip, you will be navigating through clouds of salmon flies, green drakes and caddis as the hatches are really something you must be there for.

Our Guides

Here at St. Peter's Fly Shop, our commitment is to offer clients a personalized, top-tier experience with our friendly, knowledgeable, and expertly trained guides. Unlike some other establishments, we don't simply match you with someone learning the waters; our guides are seasoned on the water's they guide; with a deep understanding of local streams, hatches, and techniques. While we embrace the unique personalities of our team, you won't encounter any attitudes, assumptions, or criticisms from our guides. Your satisfaction is our priority, and if for any reason you encounter anything less than exceptional service, we encourage you to let us know—we're here to ensure your experience exceeds expectations.

Guide Trips

All guide trips can be instructional...or we can just go out and help you catch fish. Part school, part fishing, our trips will build your fundamental fly fishing skills, expand your understanding of local entomology, work the kinks out of your presentation, or help you get rid of that annoying tailing loop. Let us know what we can do to maximize your enjoyment on stream and we'll do whatever we can to accommodate you.
