Winter Fishing Update: Poudre River
Warmer weather and longer days are finally here, and the fish in the Poudre river are becoming quite active. The lower sections of the canyon up to the Mishawaka are completely open, and the ice sheets are pulling back substantially above that. Ultralight nymph rigs underneath a yarn or small indicator are the best ways to locate fish in the early to late morning. We have been using Two-Bit Hookers and Poison Tungs trailed by UV midges and Juju Baetis during those colder morning hours. Fish are beginning to look up and in the afternoon we’ve begun to see smaller Baetis start to hatch and fish are keying into those bugs, eating both emergers and dry flies. Be sure to have a variety of bugs, both nymphs and dries in order to be prepared for whatever the day brings. Small CDC BWO’s and Ext. Body BWO’s will become much more productive as the weather continues to heat up and the days become longer.
Be aware that there is still some lingering ice and snow higher up in the canyon, so stay safe while you are out there fishing!
Feel free to stop by or give either shop a call with any questions you may have regarding the fishing! Tight lines!
